Have you ever witnessed the beach waves emitting blue light? Well, this phenomenon also known as Bioluminescence is famous in a few beaches. While Maldives is one place where you can be sure to spot this, turns out you don’t have to travel that far, after all! While bioluminescence can be witnessed in a few places worldwide, India’s beaches are increasingly becoming hotspots for this natural wonder. Kerala’s beaches are known to exhibit Bioluminescence and in case you haven’t had a chance to witness it, this is your chance to do so!

Also called Kavaru locally, Bioluminescence is spotted mostly in the villages of Kumbalangi and Chellanam, which have vast pokkali paddy fields. People flock here in large numbers to get a glimpse of the magical glow. Last year too, many tourists visited Kumbalangi to enjoy the Kavaru sight.

What Is Bioluminescence?

A striking blue light illuminates the water, creating a magical spectacle. The glow is caused due to the accumulation of salt in the water and the summer heat. This high saline content in the water triggers microscopic bacteria, algae, plankton, and fungi, thereby emitting blue light. These organisms emit light to attract mates and drive away predators.

Where can you watch Bioluminescence in Kerala?

Typically, this phenomenon is seen in Kumbalangi and Chellanam. Last year bio-luminance was spotted in Kumbalangi’s Pokkalipadam. This year, however, it has been spotted in Chellanam. This year, the display of the magical phenomenon was apparently delayed due to high tides. Locals have that the light would not glow brighter when the moon shines bright. However, by mid-March, the full moon disappears, allowing tourists to witness Kavaru in the waters, after sunset.

Although the phenomenon might be a longstanding one, it was the Malayalam film Kumbalangi Nights that turned Kerala’s beaches into a popular tourist attraction. The film’s portrayal of the eclectic blue waters in the coastal villages led to a heavy influx of tourism in these regions.
