Khimsar is one of those places that doesn’t scream for attention but somehow stays with you long after you’ve left. Tucked away in the Nagaur district of Rajasthan, it’s about halfway between Jodhpur and Bikaner. This little town sits quietly on the edge of the Thar Desert, and what makes it stand out isn’t just the dunes or the silence — it’s the feel of a place that’s proud of its past, content in its present, and untouched by the tourist overload you’ll find elsewhere in Rajasthan. Palaces, camel calls, and sands that stretch into stories — that’s the vibe. Airbrush-Image-Enhancer-1748248699412.jpeg

How To Reach Khimsar

By Air

The nearest airport is in Jodhpur, about 90 km away. Once you land, a taxi ride takes around 2 hours through roads that go from city to sparse desert within minutes.

By Train

Nagaur and Jodhpur are the closest railheads. From there, you’ll find buses or cabs to take you to Khimsar. Trains from Delhi, Jaipur, and other major cities stop at these stations regularly.

By Road

If you’re driving in from Jodhpur or Bikaner, the road trip itself is half the charm. It’s dry, open country — with goats, small dhabas, and the occasional peacock making an appearance. State transport buses also run from Jodhpur and Nagaur if you’re on a budget.

Things To Do In Khimsar

Explore Khimsar Fort

This is where time feels like it took a break. The 16th-century Khimsar Fort is now a heritage hotel, and whether you’re staying or just visiting, the architecture alone is worth the trip. Massive walls, secret courtyards, and old-world charm everywhere you look.

Ride Through The Dunes

Khimsar Sand Dunes Village, located a short distance from the main fort, gives you that true desert feel — without the crowds. Camel safaris, jeep rides, and evenings around a bonfire with folk music make it all feel like a page out of an old travel diary.

Watch The Sunset

One of the simplest yet most magical things to do here is just sit on top of a dune and watch the sun melt into the horizon. There’s no noise, no buildings — just wind, warm colors, and quiet.

Visit Local Villages

The nearby Bishnoi villages offer a peek into Rajasthan’s desert life. Mud homes, women carrying water pots, and crafts made with care. It’s humbling and beautiful.

Spot Wildlife

Surprisingly, the area is home to blackbucks, desert foxes, and a lot of birds. If you’re patient, nature here rewards you with sightings you don’t expect in the middle of all this sand.

What’s Famous In Khimsar?

Khimsar is most famous for its fort and the serene sand dunes nearby. But beyond that, it’s the lack of noise — both literally and metaphorically — that makes it special. The village hasn’t been overtaken by tourist kitsch. You won’t find lines outside cafes or flashy shops. What you do get is an authentic piece of Rajasthan, still breathing its own rhythm.

Also, the hospitality here feels personal — whether it’s at the fort or in a desert tent, people genuinely welcome you. And let’s not forget the food — simple Rajasthani meals with bajra roti, ker sangri, and endless glasses of buttermilk that somehow taste better here.

Best Time To Visit Khimsar

October to March is the sweet spot. Days are warm but not burning, and nights can get chilly — the good kind where a campfire actually makes sense. If you love colors and culture, visiting during local fairs or festivals like Nagaur Festival (held nearby) adds an extra layer to the experience. Avoid peak summer (April to June) unless you have a very high tolerance for heat. Monsoon is rare here, and even when it comes, it doesn’t last long — just enough to give the dunes a quick rinse.
