A 5-night Sri Lanka beach trip costs about ₹35,000 to ₹55,000 per person on a budget, ₹60,000 to ₹90,000 mid-range, and ₹1,00,000 or more for luxury, with flights included. Three things decide where you land in that range: the city you fly from, the hotels you choose and whether you hire a private car. Published guides disagree for exactly those reasons. Plan with a range, not one neat figure.

We've planned 21 trips to Sri Lanka for travellers, and our usual 5-night route is Mirissa for two nights, then Bentota for two, then Colombo for one. That route is the thread here, and the costs below follow it. The box below shows how the main costs look when you travel the budget way and the mid-range way.

Flights: the cost your city decides

Flights are the biggest single swing in the budget. From Chennai a return runs about ₹8,000 to ₹16,000, so southern travellers start the trip well ahead. From Delhi and Mumbai the guides quote anywhere from about ₹12,000 to ₹36,000, depending on the source and your dates. Booking early narrows that gap more than anything else you can do.

IndiGo started a Delhi to Colombo flight on 29 March 2026, and its timing shapes the first night. It lands at 22:20, which is too late to drive happily down to Mirissa. Delhi travellers should budget a first night near Colombo, or a late transfer, before heading south. That adds one hotel night to the budget, or you take a night off Bentota. The return leaves Colombo at 23:20, which suits a final day and evening in the city. Kolkata has no non-stop flight to Colombo, so its fare depends on a connection and is worth checking before you fix a budget.

Where you sleep: Mirissa, Bentota, Colombo

Hotels are the second big lever. A guesthouse costs about ₹2,500 to ₹5,000 a night, while a five-star beach resort starts around ₹18,000. Across five nights, that choice alone can move your total by more than the flight does.

Our advice for a mid-range couple is to spend on the two beach stops and keep Colombo simple. You arrive tired or leave late, so one practical night in the city is all it needs. The beach nights are where a pool, a sea view and a good breakfast actually change the trip.

Colombo and Bentota are the bases our trips use most, at 13 and 11 of our 21 trips. Mirissa comes first on the route for a reason. Two nights there give you one clear early morning for the whale boat in the November to April season, without rushing the next transfer.

Getting around: a private car or trains and buses

A private car with driver, at ₹4,000 to ₹6,500 a day, is the cost that separates most budget quotes from mid-range ones. Trains at ₹100 to ₹500 a ride, and buses for less, cut it sharply. The catch is time, and hauling luggage on and off at every stop. We weigh the car against group size. For three or four people sharing, it costs far less per head and usually wins.

The car also earns its keep on transfer days, because the coast road between your stops is full of reasons to pull over. Leaving Mirissa, you pass the stilt fishermen near Weligama, then Galle Fort, the UNESCO-listed town of ramparts, shaded streets and Dutch-era houses. Galle sits between Mirissa and Bentota, so it fits on the way rather than as a separate day trip. Just before Bentota, the Kosgoda turtle hatchery is a conservation centre where you can see rescued sea turtles.

What you pay to do things

On this route, the paid experience that matters is the Mirissa whale-watching boat. A standard trip costs about ₹2,500 to ₹4,000 per person (LKR 10,000 to 16,000). Boats leave the harbour around 6 to 7 AM, when the sea is calmer, and the trip takes three to five hours. Blue whales are the main hope, and sightings are never guaranteed, though January and February are the strongest months.

Food is where Sri Lanka stays easy on your wallet. A local meal costs about ₹350 to ₹450. In Colombo, follow the metal-on-metal clatter of a kottu roti stall, where chopped roti is stir-fried with the fillings in a noisy show. The ingredients are flexible, so vegetarians are easily looked after. It costs a fraction of a mid-range dinner for two.

The hill country and the heritage sites are where a 5-night budget starts to stretch. Sigiriya costs $20 at the SAARC rate Indians pay, and the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy is LKR 1,500. The bigger cost is the long drives between them. We leave them out of a 5-night beach plan rather than rush them, and give them their own days on a longer trip.

When the price moves, and the cost you no longer pay

October and November are the cheapest months, with hotel rates down by up to 50%. The trade-off is rain and a rough sea, and most whale boats only restart in November. Early December, before the 20th, is a good window for value with the dry season settling in on the south and west coast. Christmas and New Year are a different story: book those 10 to 12 months ahead.

There is also one cost to cross off. From 25 May 2026, the ETA for Indian passport holders is free, but you still must apply online at the official ETA site before you fly. Drop the ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 that older cost pages still count.

Questions travellers ask

is 1 lakh enough for Sri Lanka for a couple

Yes, for 5 days on a budget, especially flying from a southern city, since a budget trip runs about ₹35,000 to ₹55,000 per person. A mid-range couple should plan for more: guides put a 5-day mid-range trip for two at about ₹1,24,000 to ₹1,50,000.

is Sri Lanka costly for Indians

No, it is one of the most affordable international trips from India. Flights and hotels are the big costs, and food and local transport stay cheap.

is 5 days enough for Sri Lanka

Five days suits the beaches with a night in Colombo, which is how our usual route works. Adding the hill country or heritage sites needs more days if you don't want to rush.

is Sri Lanka visa free for Indians

The ETA is free for Indians from 25 May 2026, but you still need to get it online before arrival. Apply on the official site, not through a lookalike page that charges a fee.
