Here is the honest truth about travelling abroad from India in July: many people get it wrong. They pay peak prices for places that are more crowded, more expensive and less pleasant in July than in May or October. Rome in July means queuing at the Colosseum at 38°C. Santorini in July means sharing the Oia sunset with thousands of others.

But July also brings some of the best trips of the year, if you go to the right places. Bali is at its driest and clearest. Mauritius is cool, quiet and at its best. Sri Lanka's east coast, which many Indian travellers have never considered, is in perfect condition. And the Maldives continues its off-season with prices well below December's.

This guide follows one rule: go where July is genuinely the right month, not just a possible one. Fares and budgets are rough guides at today's prices.

The best July trip abroad is not the most popular one. It is the one where the place is at its peak right now.

Bali in July: Driest and Clearest

If any country is unambiguously right for July, it is Bali. The dry season peaks, skies stay clear and humidity is at its lowest. The terraces at Tegalalang and Jatiluwih are green with irrigation, and the surf at Uluwatu and Padang Padang is at its best. The Bali Arts Festival in Denpasar, mid-June to mid-July, fills a central stage with Kecak, Legong and Barong dances and gamelan orchestras.

The catch: July is also Bali's busiest month, with Australian and European holidays. Book Ubud and Seminyak stays four to six weeks ahead.

Mauritius in July: The Month Most Indians Miss

Ask most Indians when to visit Mauritius and they say December to April. That is not wrong, but July is often better, and cheaper. It is winter in Mauritius: 18 to 23°C, very little humidity and the clearest lagoons of the year, with snorkelling visibility of 20 metres or more. Humpback whales pass the west coast from about July to October, and the winds at Le Morne bring kitesurfers from around the world.

Hotel rates are often 20 to 30 percent below the December peak, and the island is quieter.

Sri Lanka's East Coast in July

This is the most underrated July pick for Indian travellers. While Sri Lanka's west and south coasts are in the monsoon, the east coast is in its dry season: calm, clear water at Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Pasikudah, and uncrowded beaches.

Pigeon Island National Park, a short boat ride from Nilaveli, has some of the island's best snorkelling, with reef sharks, turtles and coral. Arugam Bay in the south-east is one of Asia's best-known surf breaks from May to September, with a relaxed, inexpensive village vibe. Since May 2026, Indians get a free 30-day ETA, and flights from South India take one to two hours.

Maldives in July: Luxury at the Right Price

July is the Maldives' wet season, and prices fall 30 to 50 percent from the December to April peak. In practice that means passing showers and some cloudy days, water at 29 to 30°C and nothing that seriously disrupts a resort holiday. A villa that costs ₹40,000 a night in December can drop to around half in July. The lagoons and sunsets are the same; only the price and the number of guests change.

Europe in July: Go, But Go Smart

Europe in July is not a mistake. It simply punishes lazy planning. The days are the longest of the year, festivals fill every town and the Mediterranean is at its warmest. The mistake is going where everyone else goes. Remember to apply for your Schengen visa early, as July falls in peak season.

Skip Santorini, Go to Milos or Naxos

Santorini in July is crowded with cruise passengers, so much so that Greece now charges cruise visitors a landing fee in peak months, and good rooms go months in advance. Milos, a few hours by ferry, has volcanic scenery of its own, beaches like moon-white Sarakiniko and far fewer people. Naxos is bigger, with better beaches than Santorini and excellent local food. Ferries link them all.

Portugal Instead of Spain

Portugal in July is warm, beautiful and less crowded than Spain. Lisbon has trams through steep lanes, superb seafood, the Alfama, Belém and live fado. The Algarve's beaches cost less than Spain's Costa del Sol, and Porto and the Douro Valley's vineyards are lovely in summer.

Turkey: The Smart Mediterranean Choice

Turkey gives you much of what Greece and Italy offer in July (warm sea, ancient sites, great food) at noticeably lower cost. Istanbul is lively along the Bosphorus, Cappadocia's sunrise balloon flights are still bookable with some planning, and the coast from Bodrum to Antalya is in perfect summer shape.

The pattern across May, June and July is the same. The traveller who books early, picks places where the month is right rather than merely possible and steps slightly off the obvious path has the better trip. In July that means Bali over Venice, Mauritius in its best month, Sri Lanka's east coast over its west, and Milos over Santorini. These are not second choices. They are the right choices for July.
