Until a decade ago, Kazakhstan was a country less-visited by travellers. However, this is not the case today, thanks to the country’s stunning landscapes, rich culture and history. Almaty is Kazakhstan’s largest city and its former capital. Tucked away in the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains, Almaty might be a well-known trading and cultural hub, but that does not take away the touristic importance this little gem has garnered. However, bear in mind that the city is also one of the most expensive in Central Asia. But, that does not mean you cannot plan a trip here.

Good news for Indians: Kazakhstan is visa-free for up to 14 days, and there are direct flights from Delhi. A little bit of planning will help you save big bucks in Almaty, while enjoying the city’s many offerings to the fullest. Read on to know more!

1. Travel During The Shoulder Season

Summer is generally the perfect time to visit Almaty. Warm temperatures, and longer days make it ideal for outdoor activities. However, this is also the season when the place is crowded with tourists, making it more expensive. So, if you wish to travel on a budget, it’s best to avoid travelling to Almaty in summer. Alternatively, the shoulder season- spring and autumn are ideal season to head here. The weather is cooler but not as extreme as winter. As not many tourists visit the city during these seasons, everything from flight tickets to accommodation is cheaper during this time. The winter season is also a good time for budget travelers who do not mind the minus degree temperatures and the snowfall.

2. Pick Your Accommodation Wisely

‘Where to stay’ is a one big question that comes up while planning any trip. While Almaty is dotted with a whole lot of luxury stay options, don’t forget that the city also has numerous hostels offering utmost comfort at an affordable price. Almaty has about 57 hostels you can pick from and this would cost you not more than $15 per night. The hostels come with a kitchen, letting you whip up a quick meal. Besides, if you fancy a little more privacy, book a budget hotel which would cost you $20 per night.

3. Explore Low-Cost Dining Options

When you’re travelling on a budget, eating three meals at a fancy restaurant might not be the best bet. But, fret not! Almaty is flooded with cafes and eateries that will let you enjoy a hearty meal without burning a hole in your pocket. In case you’re wondering where to head, Navat, Kaganat, Traktir Medved, Rumi, and Kishlak, are some options. Besides, some of these places serve great Kazakh food! Alternatively, if you’re staying at a place that has a kitchen, head to The Green Bazaar for fresh, local produce and whip up your own meal.

4. Opt For Public Transportation

Almaty boasts a vast public transit system and is a well-organized city. The city is accessible by cab, subway, trolleybuses, and buses. You can purchase a rechargeable "ONAY" card to use public transport. The card is accessible at train, metro, and airport stations. Additionally, you can pay in KZT and receive a printed ticket that you must keep at the conclusion of your journey. The city is also home to a large number of taxis, so you can also download a taxi service app if you wish to travel hassle-free.

While you can visit Almaty’s popular attractions, it would be best to explore the free hidden gems when travelling on a budget. Get floored at the Big Almaty Lake. Surrounded by the breathtaking Tian Shan firs, this is a perfect spot to plan picnic with the whole family. Alternatively, you can also hike or cycle to the Big Almaty Peak.

Additionally, Almaty has a number of parks and other attractions that are either free or inexpensive to explore. Head to First President's Park, where you can see lovely flowers and sculptures and discover the area's history, or tour the stunning Zenkov Cathedral for free.
