May splits India in two. Delhi and Rajasthan pass 44°C and the Deccan bakes, while the Himalayas open up after winter, the Northeast turns green before the monsoon and the southern hill stations have some of the most pleasant weather in the country. Where you go decides whether May feels like a holiday or an endurance test.

This guide covers the best places to visit in India in May 2027 region by region, with temperatures, timing, permits and the places worth skipping this month.

May in India is not about avoiding the heat. It is about knowing where the heat cannot reach you.

Hill Stations in Himachal Pradesh in May

Manali

May is one of Manali's best months. Solang Valley keeps snow on its upper slopes into early May, the Beas runs fast with snowmelt and the valley is bright green. Days in town are 18 to 22°C and nights drop to around 10°C. Since the Atal Tunnel opened in 2020, you no longer need the Rohtang Pass to reach Sissu and Lahaul: the tunnel is open all year. Rohtang itself usually reopens for sightseeing in mid to late May and needs an online permit (around ₹550 a vehicle, closed on Tuesdays). Book hotels three to four weeks ahead, as May school holidays fill the town.

Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj

Dharamshala sits at 15 to 25°C in May, with the Dhauladhar range clear before the monsoon clouds build. McLeod Ganj, home of the Tibetan government in exile, has the Tsuglagkhang temple complex, good cafés and easy trails. The Triund trek, a one-day climb to a meadow facing the Dhauladhars, is at its best in May.

Spiti Valley

In May, reach Spiti from the Shimla side through Kinnaur: that road stays open most of the year. The Manali side depends on the Kunzum Pass, which usually opens only in June. Spiti is a high cold desert of bare mountains, cliffside monasteries and villages like Langza and Kibber. Nights are still cold and stays are simple, so go slowly.

Uttarakhand in May: Rishikesh and the Char Dham

Rishikesh and Haridwar

Rishikesh is warm in May (28 to 35°C), but the Ganga runs high with snowmelt and rafting is at its best before the season closes for the monsoon at the end of June. Evenings by the river are pleasant, and the Ganga Aarti at Haridwar's Har Ki Pauri is worth the short drive.

Char Dham Yatra in May 2027

May is the busiest month of the Char Dham Yatra. Kedarnath and Badrinath usually open around Akshaya Tritiya, which falls on 9 May 2027; the temple committees announce exact dates in February and March. Registration on the Uttarakhand tourism portal is compulsory for every pilgrim, and helicopter seats to Kedarnath sell out fast, so book as soon as bookings open.

Ladakh in May: The High Desert Opens

Ladakh is one of the best places to visit in India in May. Flights to Leh run all year, the Srinagar–Leh road over Zoji La is usually open by spring, and the Manali–Leh road usually opens in late May or early June once the Baralacha La is cleared. By late May the roads to Pangong Tso and Nubra are normally open. The sky is a deep, clear blue and the crowds of July have not yet arrived.

Two things matter more than anything else. First, acclimatise: Leh is at 3,500 metres, so rest for two full days before going higher. Second, Indians no longer need an Inner Line Permit. Instead, pay the Ladakh environment fee online at lahdclehpermit.in (₹400 plus ₹20 a day wildlife fee) and carry the receipt to Pangong, Nubra, Tso Moriri and Hanle.

Northeast India in May

Darjeeling and Sikkim

The first half of May is Darjeeling's sweet spot. Kanchenjunga is usually clear from Tiger Hill until pre-monsoon cloud builds in the second half of the month, and the tea gardens are in their second flush, the harvest prized for its muscatel flavour. Pair it with Gangtok and Pelling for a week in the hills.

Meghalaya

Meghalaya in May is green, quiet and fully open before the heavy monsoon. The living root bridges near Nongriat, grown from rubber fig roots by Khasi villagers, are worth the 3,500-step walk. Shillong is cool, with a music and café culture of its own. One note: the Umngot river at Dawki is clearest from November to April, and pre-monsoon rain can cloud it by late May.

Best Hill Stations in South India in May

Ooty and the Nilgiris

Ooty, at 2,240 metres, stays at 15 to 25°C in May. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage line, climbs from Mettupalayam through forest and tea gardens, and the Ooty Flower Show at the Botanical Garden is held in May. Go on weekdays: weekends are crowded with summer holiday visitors, and Tamil Nadu requires an e-pass for vehicles entering the Nilgiris in peak season.

Coorg (Kodagu)

May is Coorg's last dry month before the monsoon arrives in early June. Coffee estates are green, pre-monsoon showers start to fill the waterfalls, and there are far fewer visitors than in winter. Estate stays with guided walks and coffee tours are all running.

Munnar

The first two weeks of May are good in Munnar: clear days, green tea estates and fewer visitors than in winter. From the third week, pre-monsoon cloud makes the weather less predictable. Eravikulam National Park, home of the Nilgiri tahr, reopens in April after its calving season.

Andaman Islands in May: Go Before the Monsoon

May is the last good month for the Andamans. The sea is calm, visibility for snorkelling and diving around Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) and Neil (Shaheed Dweep) is excellent, and the winter crowds have gone. The monsoon usually reaches the islands around 20 May, so go in the first two weeks.

Places to Avoid in India in May

  • Rajasthan (Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bikaner): The Thar regularly reaches 46 to 50°C in May. That heat is dangerous, not just uncomfortable. Save Rajasthan for October to February.
  • Delhi, Agra and the Golden Triangle: 44 to 46°C with sudden dust storms. Visit from October to March.
  • Goa: Hot, humid and closing down. Most beach shacks shut by mid-May and the sea turns rough.
  • Mumbai and the west coast: Sticky and stormy as the monsoon approaches.
  • Varanasi and the Gangetic plains: Around 44°C with high humidity. Save it for October to March.

Tips for Travelling in India in May

  • Book early. School holidays make May peak season. Hill station hotels fill three to four weeks ahead and Leh flights even earlier.
  • Respect the altitude. In Ladakh and Spiti, rest two full days on arrival, drink plenty of water and skip alcohol for the first 48 hours.
  • Pack in layers. Hill stations need a fleece for evenings; Ladakh and Spiti need thermals, a windproof jacket and a warm hat; the Andamans need light cotton and strong sunscreen.
  • Check roads before you drive. Pass openings move every year with the snow. Check the Border Roads Organisation and local news for the Manali–Leh road, Kunzum and Zoji La.
  • Plan around the midday sun. Wherever you are, do outdoor sightseeing before 11am and after 4pm.
