There’s something about the Himalayas, isn’t it? Fresh air, the lush greenery and the majestic mountains make this place a must-go for nature lovers. Besides, if you’re into trekking, the Himalayas have a lot to offer. Spring in the Himalayas is welcomed with a burst of colours as the rhododendron forests come to life. Besides, the season brings in a balance calming the harsh winters, letting you explore the region by foot. The crisp air, and the blue skies offer plenty of photo opportunities and a soul-soothing experience.
Lastly, spring is less crowded – this means you can enjoy a more serene and intimate connection with nature. One practical note before you pick: every trek below needs forest or park permits, and the rules for camping on Uttarakhand’s high meadows have been tightened in recent years, so go with a registered operator. So, what are the best treks in the Himalayas? Read on and plan your trip!
1. Deoriatal – Chandrashila Trek
The premier rhododendron trek in India, and the ideal expedition for the spring season, boasts the most breathtaking mountain vistas from its peak. Located within the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttarakhand, the Deoriatal Chandrashila trek is a delight for wildlife enthusiasts. Additionally, it serves as an excellent summit ascent (12,083 ft) for those who are new to trekking in the Himalayas.
Summit climbs offer a sense of accomplishment as you ascend a mountain for hours in the early morning hours. Upon reaching the pinnacle, you witness the sun's rays illuminating the sky. What sets Deoriatal Chandrashila apart is that it provides a panoramic view of all the significant peaks in both Western and Eastern Uttarakhand from its summit. When we say all, we truly mean all.
2. Surya Top Trek
Surya Top serves as an extension of the highly cherished Dayara Bugyal trek. Many trekkers find themselves emotional upon arriving at the Dayara meadows during the Dayara Bugyal trek. However, Surya Top truly offers an unparalleled opportunity to fully appreciate the splendor of the Dayara meadows. The two-day trek across these meadows will not be just a short visit. At Devkund, you reach the end of Dayara meadows, where vast stretches of meadows vanish into distant horizons behind you. This trek allows you to thoroughly explore everything that Dayara Meadows has to offer, an experience made possible only through the Surya Top Trek.
The spring season for the Surya Top Trek begins in mid-March and lasts until the end of April. The snows of high altitudes may begin melting, while the meadows of lower elevations turn green and lush. Long-stemmed flowers push their heads out from the tender fringes of grass, while rhododendrons bloom on the trees. Spring is a perfect season as it allows you to see a real diversity of colours in the meadows and on the ridge walk, where snow, green, and flowers magically fill up the space.
3. Ranthan Kharak Trek
The Spring season possesses a distinct allure in the Kumaon region. Generally, the forests along trekking paths need time to recover following a harsh winter. Yet, this is not the case for Ranthan Kharak. In this area, the woodlands come alive with lush greenery, displaying a diverse range of rhododendrons, trees, mushrooms, and a multitude of birds and wildlife.
As you navigate the trails, you will encounter concealed waterfalls, with water occasionally cascading down your shoulders as you make your way through dense thickets until you reach Bajimanian Kharak.
Upon leaving the tree line, you will discover ridges and ledges adorned with sporadic patches of snow.
To withstand the cold, it is recommended to bring 4-5 layers of warm clothing. Make sure to shield any exposed skin from the harsh winds, especially after you pass Bajimanian Kharak. The kharaks are noted for their lush green grass mixed with an array of wildflowers.
4. Brahmatal Trek
On the Brahmatal trek, you traverse a high ridge where the mountains descend steeply on either side. This feature is known as a ridgeline, which often creates the sensation of an expansive summit. A highlight of the trek is the opportunity to camp on this ridge at Tilandi. From this vantage point, you can admire the breathtaking Himalayan landscape stretching out on both sides. Being situated at a high elevation in Tilandi allows you to experience both the sunrise and sunset from the same campsite. However, this elevated position also makes it the windiest camping spot along the trek. Additionally, from Brahmatal Top, you can enjoy close-up views of Mt Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghunti!

The Sandakphu – Phalut trek is one of the most sought-after trips, offering unrivaled views of four of the highest mountains in the world: Mt Everest, Mt Lhotse, Mt Makalu, and Mt Kanchenjunga. If spring trekking is what you are looking at, this one deserves to be in your directory. Apart from magnificent views, trekkers are treated to grand sights of forests of Singalila National Park. The colours of the rhododendron, bamboo, and pine trees are simply enchanting. Being up in the mountains with such cleansed air is an experience by itself. Just as a clutter-free home brings clarity to an upset mind, a peaceful walk in the Himalayas clears that very very much more.
6. Goechala Trek
One of the main attractions in the Goechala trek is the breathtaking, surrounding mountains seen in its panoramic view. This brings trekkers not just to the Kanchenjunga peak, but to an astonishing fourteen different summits. Such sight is unusual in trekking and this is probably why trekkers always regard Goechala as one of Sikkim's great mountain treks. The whole route towards Goechala is enriched with lush forests of rhododendrons, blooming with bright pink and red flowers. As spring gives way to the early summer months of April and May; it is indeed wonderful to stroll along wooden pathways that crisscross this jungle. Another important highlight of the trek to Goechala is the Samiti Lake. The calm waters reflect the silhouette of Mt. Pandim in the lake, early in the morning, offering a scene to die for.
7. Kuari Pass Trek
Kuari Pass offers an extraordinary trekking experience, captivating everyone with its stunning vistas of Nanda Devi, the highest mountain entirely within India. This trek is among the most comprehensive, featuring some of the finest forests, campsites, ridge walks, and panoramic mountain views. Whether you are an experienced trekker or a novice, the Kuari Pass trek is an absolute must-do. It provides breathtaking views of some of India's most renowned mountains, including Mt Nanda Devi (25,673 feet) and Mt Dronagiri (23,182 feet), making it a must-visit destination in any season.
8. Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek
Among all the meadow treks in our nation, Ali Bedni Bugyal offers the most spectacular mountain vistas. The peaks of Mt Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghunti are located just a short distance from Bedni Bugyal.
The Ali and Bedni meadows are a remarkable sight in their own right, stretching as far as the eye can see. They rank among the largest high-altitude meadows in the country. Additionally, the breathtaking sunrises and sunsets experienced while camping at Abin Kharak, along with the unique adventure of trekking through ancient, dense forests, make this trek a true gem
9. Kedarkantha Trek
The Kedarkantha trek is highly regarded in the Indian Himalayas for numerous reasons, with the ascent to the summit being the most significant.
The summit climb of Kedarkantha is exceptionally fulfilling. From the trek's base camp, the peak is prominently visible. As you begin your journey in the early morning light and steadily climb the steep slope, the scenery around you reveals itself. The climb poses various challenges; the path remains persistently steep, and as you near the peak, the difficulty intensifies. However, the majestic peaks of the upper Himalayas accompany you until you finally reach your destination.
Upon reaching the summit and absorbing the breathtaking views of the Himalayas, a profound sense of satisfaction and achievement washes over you. This experience is truly unmatched. Few treks provide such an exhilarating adventure, making it a favoured choice for novices seeking an exceptional summit climb.
10. Dayara Bugyal Trek
Dayara Bugyal ranks among the finest meadow treks in our nation, often adorned with a layer of soft snow. The sight of Mt. Bandarpoonch from these meadows is truly captivating. Despite its proximity to the Gangotri region, only a limited number of trekkers have explored the Dayara Bugyal trek.
This trek is a hidden gem that offers breathtaking experiences with minimal exertion. The expansive meadows, picturesque campsites, and magnificent mountain vistas render Dayara Bugyal an exceptional choice for summer trekking, particularly for families with children aged seven and older.
