Brit summers are like no other- agree? Well, if you know, you know! London summers are truly like no other. The city wears an enviable vibe, offering a wide range of outdoor activities that let you bask in the glorious sunshine. While we’re sure you know of the famous ‘London summer bucket list’ activities, there’s more that this vibrant city has to offer.
From spending an afternoon at a rooftop bar to watching a movie under the sky, here are 10 things you must do to make the most of London summers. (Indians need a UK visitor visa, so apply a couple of months ahead.)
1. Enjoy Outdoor Cinemas
Do you enjoy watching movies in London theaters? After all, when sunny weather and nice ambience prevail outside, a darkened room might seem less appealing. Luckily, outdoor cinemas are the answer! Watch movies under the stars while enjoying the calm summer breeze! As the temperature soars, several open-air film spots open across London's beautiful canals, parks and rooftops. These also boast stunning skyline views and the immaculate gardens of historic estates. Essentially, wherever outdoor screenings are offered, seize the chance to go!
2. Spend An Afternoon At A Rooftop Bar
Presenting elegant skyscrapers to relaxed warehouse venues and quiet pub terraces, London has a range of rooftop bars. Whether perched on top of parking garages, or hotels, these bars offer spectacular city views and exquisite drinks . Selected places in trendy Shoreditch, buzzing Soho, Covent Garden, and hipster haven Peckham are where you can bask in sunset views. While some rooftops might only be open in summer, many welcome visitors throughout the year, allowing them to enjoy the atmosphere. If that sounds too much for you, head down to one of London’s terrific beer gardens for something more stable.
3. Escape The City On A Summery Day Trip
While London's atmosphere is a vibe you shouldn't miss, there's nothing wrong in occasionally fantasizing a relaxing escape from less bustling pockets. Experience a taste of that holiday spirit by embarking on a day trip to one of the numerous serene and delightful locations just a few hours from London, each offering a wealth of experiences. From charming historic towns and picturesque villages to sandy shores and scenic countryside, there's a huge list of top day trip destinations, dotted with charming pubs and excellent restaurants—all conveniently located for a day trip.
4. Sunbathe At An Urban Beach
Let us be honest: urban beaches do not compare to genuine beaches. We will not mislead you into believing otherwise. There is no ocean for swimming, access to quality fish and chips is quite limited, and surfing is generally not an option. However, since a trip to the coast is not always feasible, especially when time is short, why not simplify your life by visiting an urban beach? These locations offer sand, cocktails, lively beach parties, and plenty of sunshine in summer. A win-win, isn't it?
5. Go Fruit Or Vegetable Picking
Do you wish to engage more deeply with your food beyond simple tasks like peeling, chopping, and cooking? Consider visiting a pick-your-own farm in London, where you can experience the process of harvesting without the need to cultivate your own fruits and vegetables. The primary picking season runs from May to August, although the specific produce available will vary with the seasons. In June, you can fill a punnet with vibrant strawberries, enjoy the beauty of sunflowers in August, or collect seasonal apples, pumpkins, and squashes in September—it's entirely up to you! The outskirts of London are dotted with farms featuring expansive pick-your-own fields that will keep you entertained throughout the summer. Venturing into the fields for a day of picking is not only an enjoyable outing (which it certainly is) but also an excellent way to enhance your sustainability efforts by reducing reliance on plastic packaging typically found in supermarkets. Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to capture numerous beautiful selfies while keeping the children engaged.

In recent years, London has developed a passion for outdoor swimming, captivated by the allure of immersing themselves in cool waters regardless of the weather conditions. Consequently, when temperatures soar, the ideal destination becomes the poolside of one of the city's exceptional lidos or open-air swimming venues. During the UK's infrequent heatwaves, it is advisable to make reservations in advance to secure your spot for an outdoor swim, as you can expect large crowds. However, there are numerous benefits to taking a dip on less favorable days as well. Whether you seek alternative fitness options, enjoyable family activities, or simply a tranquil spot to relax by the water, London's finest lidos and outdoor swimming pools has something for everyone.
7. Immerse Yourself In London’s Lavender Fields
Come June, London's outskirts are enveloped in a delightful herbal aroma and bursts of vivid purple, signaling the arrival of lavender season. This summer, immerse yourself in a sea of purple by visiting one of the capital's aromatic lavender gardens, or take a day trip to explore expansive fields of these blooms. Kennington Park, Kew Gardens, Vauxhall Park, Kent, Surrey, and Hertfordshire are some pockets where you can head to get your lavender dose. Whether you seek a fragrant picnic spot or simply wish to observe the bees, the lavender in London is sure to treat you well!
8. Watch the Summer Solstice at Stonehenge
Enhance your holiday experience in London by venturing to the outskirts to explore remarkable attractions like Stonehenge, the most renowned prehistoric monument in Europe. This season is particularly ideal for a visit, as the summer solstice draws huge crowds, where they engage in enchanting rituals that honor the connection between the Earth and the Sun. It is indeed a fascinating event! While it is possible to visit this megalith independently, the journey can be challenging due to limited public transport options and its distance from London (130 kilometers). So, hop on an organized guided bus tour to Stonehenge. Solstice access to the stones is usually free, but parking and coach tours sell out fast, so book your transport well in advance. On normal days, buy timed tickets online.
9. Enjoy Lip-Smacking Delicacies at Taste Of London Food Festival
Regent's Park hosts the Taste of London Festival, usually in mid-June, an event that gathers the city's top chefs to delight food enthusiasts with their exquisite culinary creations. While there is an admission fee, the cost is justified by the chance to sample dishes from some of London's best-known restaurants; the line-up changes each year, so check the festival's website. You can also watch the food being made, participate in workshops, enjoy wine tastings, and purchase gourmet products as keepsakes. If you find yourself still craving more after the event, consider embarking on a food tour through London’s streets, where you can uncover hidden culinary treasures that will enhance your experience in the British capital.
10. Dance At The Notting Hill Carnival
Caribbean rhythms fill the streets of Notting Hill during the grand carnival celebrated over the final weekend of August, very much akin to their counterparts in Rio de Janeiro or Tenerife. If there was ever a time to celebrate, this is it! The entire festival presents Caribbean culture with flair: a scintillating parade of floats and dancers bedecked in body paint, feathers, and sequins, while the vibrant Caribbean beats pulsate through the streets. Join the procession as it sweeps through Notting Hill, dancing to the joyous tunes of the parade, or simply stop and savor some Jamaican jerk chicken and a few beers. You are bound to have the time of your life with the most colorful and energizing pictures ever!
