In late 2021, the government of Meghalaya made significant progress toward enhancing the safety and the overall experience for tourists in implementing the Tourism Buddy Scheme. This innovative initiative envisages placing trained local youth at various tourist sites such as scenic Shillong, stunning Sohra (Cherrapunjee), quiet Dawki, and the aesthetic Mawlynnong.

The tourism ambassadors are trained to assist travelers and ensuring a wonderful experience in Meghalaya. A batch of over 70 local youth will be trained and placed in strategic tourist spots such as Laitlum Canyon, Ward's Lake, Arwah and Mawsmai Caves, and Krangsuri Waterfalls. The training supervised by the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Meghalaya, gives these ambassadors essential skills in basic communication, first aid, navigation, and cultural etiquette. The scheme will promote tourist safety and satisfaction while creating valuable employment opportunities for local youth and ultimately benefiting the countryside in general.
